Amiibo are collectible figures from Nintendo that utilize Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to unlock and save content in compatible games for Nintendo's Wii U and 3DS consoles.

Nintendo's amiibo are currently supported by 15 games for Wii U:

Nintendo's amiibo are also supported by 11 games for Nintendo 3DS:
Several other upcoming games have been confirmed to be include amiibo support, check out the amiibo games page to learn more!

Nintendo's amiibo are used simply by touching their bases to the NFC icon on the Wii U Gamepad, the touch-screen of a 'New' 3DS XL, or the Wireless NFC Reader/Writer for 3DS while playing a compatible game.
Depending on the game, you may need to open a special 'amiibo mode' from the menu first.

A few examples of uses for amiibo figures include:

  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U allows you to customize, train, and save a custom fighter to your amiibo figure.
  • Mario Kart 8 allows you to unlock special Racing Suits for the Mii character by scanning select amiibo figures.
  • Hyrule Warriors allows you to unlock a special Spinner in-game weapon by scanning a Link amiibo figure and you can receive a random weapon, rupee, or material bonus once a day by scanning any other amiibo figure.

*The touch-screen on a 'New' Nintendo 3DS XL has a built-in NFC reader but Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, & 2DS handhelds require a Wireless NFC Reader/Writer accessory to use amiibo.

Individual amiibo figures sell for an MSRP of $12.99 and are sold at nearly every store that stocks video games.
